The women's top-seed in the U.S. Open starts play with a match this evening. Two-time defending champion Serena Williams opens play with fellow American Taylor Townsend. This is Townsend's third Grand Slam event, the first was this year's French Open. The 18-year old gained admittance to the Open as a wild card entry.
The highest seed in action today for the men is No. 2 Roger Federer, who has a match tonight against Australian Marinko Matosevic. This is Federer's 60th straight Grand Slam appearance. He hasn't lost in the first round since 2003 in the French Open.
In play this afternoon, women's eighth-seed Ana Ivanovic defeated Alison Riske of the U.S., 6-3, 6-0. The 24-year-old Riske made a breakthrough at last year's U.S. Open, reaching the fourth round after an upset of Petra Kvitova. She reached a career-high ranking of No. 40 this summer.
