The Raiders program that enjoyed flashes of brilliance over the years had no coach, no conference and seemingly no future. Depending on who you talked to, SOU was a wrestling school, or a cross country or track school. In some people's minds, athletics at the Ashland school seemed an afterthought. In spite of southern Oregon's reputation as a crazed football hotbed, no local player of any repute wanted to stick around. The hiring of Grants Pass product Craig Howard changed all that. Armed with an infectious enthusiasm, a state championship earned as a high school coach in Florida, Howard didn't come just to make football at SOU relevant, he came to bring some hardware home. Today, Howard accomplished that mission. SOU- well known for its high speed offense- made numerous big plays on defense to defeat Marian, Indiana 55-31. Southern Oregon University now owns their first national championship banner. Prolific passer Austin Dodge- the NAIA football Player of The Year-went 21 for 39 passing for 439 yards. Running back Melvin Mason ignited the Raiders early with three scores. While Mason and Dylan Young caught touchdowns, a local player, South Medford's Ryan Retzlaff added a local flavor to the title game with a score. Also playing prominent roles was Ryan's brother Matt, and fellow receiver Jeremy Scottow, a North Medford graduate also made catches. Defense? There was defense. The SOU Raiders big play secondary intercepted Marian QB Hayden Northern six times. One of those resulted in a return for a touchdown by Julius Rucker. Southern Oregon also recovered a fumble. The Raiders led 38-10 at halftime. While the Knights defense came to life in the second half, SOU already had what they needed in the bank to bring their quest to its desired conclusion. Whils Southern Oregon University likes to pride itself on its business school, its nursing program and its success in turning out teachers, there's nothing that raises an institution's profile like success on the football field. For those concerned of what trappings may come with football success, Coach Howard brings something that's often missing from collegiate sports: integrity, hard work, enthusiasm and honor. A win for Southern Oregon is a win for southern Oregon. http://www.thedove.us/sports/2014/12/19/sou-raiders-win-first-naia-national-football-championship#comments Sports Sat, 20 Dec 2014 01:20:31 +0000 Jim McCoy 9797 at http://www.thedove.us Oregon Health Insurance Signup Low By Comparison http://www.thedove.us/news/2014/12/19/oregon-health-insurance-signup-low-comparison <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-story"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="filefield-file"><img class="filefield-icon field-icon-image-jpeg" alt="image/jpeg icon" src="http://www.thedove.us/sites/all/modules/filefield/icons/image-x-generic.png" /><a href="http://www.thedove.us/sites/default/files/images/oregon health care copy_25.jpg" type="image/jpeg; length=21761">oregon health care copy.jpg</a></div> </div> </div> </div> Just over half of Oregonians previously enrolled in private insurance through the state health exchange have re-enrolled through the federal website. Officials said Friday about 40,000 Oregonians selected a plan for 2015 through HealthCare.gov. The figure covers the period through Dec. 14 - the day before a deadline to sign up for January coverage. It's likely more people enrolled on Dec. 15. About 77,000 Oregonians enrolled in coverage through Cover Oregon in 2014. Because the state abandoned the Cover Oregon portal and switched to HealthCare.gov, all Oregonians who bought coverage through Cover Oregon had to re-enroll via the federal site by Dec. 15 or face a break in coverage in January. Open enrollment runs through mid-February, but people who sign up after Dec. 15 get coverage in February or later. http://www.thedove.us/news/2014/12/19/oregon-health-insurance-signup-low-comparison#comments News health care enrollment Fri, 19 Dec 2014 20:12:33 +0000 Jim McCoy 9796 at http://www.thedove.us Jackson County Will Hold Off Enforcing GMO Ban http://www.thedove.us/news/2014/12/19/jackson-county-will-hold-enforcing-gmo-ban <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-story"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="filefield-file"><img class="filefield-icon field-icon-image-jpeg" alt="image/jpeg icon" src="http://www.thedove.us/sites/all/modules/filefield/icons/image-x-generic.png" /><a href="http://www.thedove.us/sites/default/files/images/farm sales increase copy_0.jpg" type="image/jpeg; length=21246">farm sales increase copy.jpg</a></div> </div> </div> </div> Jackson County won't be enforcing the ban on genetically modified crops approved by voters last May until a lawsuit filed by alfalfa famers is resolved. The Mail Tribune (vhttp://bit.ly/1wUiHVP) reports an agreement to that effect has been filed in federal court in Medford. The ban was to go into effect in June. The ballot measure was put up by organic farmers fearful that genetically modified sugar beets grown for seed by the Swiss biotech giant Syngenta would contaminate organic crops. A spokesman for Syngenta did not return calls for comment about its status in Jackson County. OSU Extension Service administrator Phil Van Buskirk says he is not aware of anyone now growing GMO sugar beets in Jackson County. http://www.thedove.us/news/2014/12/19/jackson-county-will-hold-enforcing-gmo-ban#comments News GMO Jackson County Fri, 19 Dec 2014 19:49:16 +0000 Jim McCoy 9795 at http://www.thedove.us Top Teams Compete At Christmas Classic http://www.thedove.us/sports/2014/12/19/top-teams-compete-christmas-classic Day Two of the Southern Oregon Subaru Christmas Classic holds another exciting day of high school hoops. The deal was agreed to last week at the winter meetings and announced Friday, a day after the Dodgers completed a trade that sent slugging outfielder Matt Kemp to San Diego. Rollins, a three-time All-Star, hit .243 last season with 11 homers, 55 RBIs and 28 steals. The 26-year-old had started 14 consecutive openers for the Phillies and helped Philadelphia win the 2008 World Series title. Elflin, 20, was 10-7 with a 3.80 ERA this year in 24 starts for Class A Lake Elsinore. Windle, 22, was a second-round draft pick in 2013 and went 12-8 with a 4.26 ERA in 25 starts and one relief appearance this year for Class A Rancho Cucamonga. http://www.thedove.us/sports/2014/12/19/dodgers-acquire-all-star-shorstop#comments Sports Fri, 19 Dec 2014 19:35:56 +0000 Jim McCoy 9793 at http://www.thedove.us ACCESS Gets Big Donation, Bids For Year-End Gifts http://www.thedove.us/news/2014/12/19/access-gets-big-donattion-bids-year-end-gifts <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-story"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="filefield-file"><img class="filefield-icon field-icon-image-jpeg" alt="image/jpeg icon" src="http://www.thedove.us/sites/all/modules/filefield/icons/image-x-generic.png" /><a href="http://www.thedove.us/sites/default/files/images/access copy_1.jpg" type="image/jpeg; length=20095">access copy.jpg</a></div> </div> </div> </div> At the same time that ACCESS is receiving a donation of 23,000 pounds of food from Sherm’s Thunderbird and Food 4 Less markets, the food assistance organization is reminding everyone that hunger doesn’t end with the holidays.
