State Treasurer Questions PERS Growth Assumptions

By Jim McCoy Fri 27th July NewsPERSTed Wheeler

Oregon Treasurer Ted Wheeler is asking state pension officials to reconsider growth assumptions that some believe are too optimistic.

That was among the recommendations Wheeler laid out in a letter he sent last month to the board of the Employees Retirement System.  PERS assumes the pension fund's investments will earn an 8 percent return.

Critics have warned that optimistic earnings assumptions lead to chronic underfunding and cause pension managers to take too much investment risk to bring in big returns.

The Oregonian reports that Wheeler's suggestions included measures to mitigate the financial impact and make them more palatable to PERS members and public agencies.
