Oregon Gains Jobs, But More Are Unemployed

Oregon's jobless rate has increased to almost 9 percent. The state Employment Department said Tuesday the unemployment rate for August was 8.9 percent - up from 8.7 percent in July and 8.5 percent in June.

Despite the higher rate, Oregon gained 8,800 jobs in August. The agency says it's the sixth consecutive month that payroll employment has grown.

Siltronic layoffs

Siltronic says it will lay off 350 employees this summer from a Portland factory that makes semiconductor wafers. KGW reports a notice was sent last week to the Oregon Dislocated Worker Unit.
     Most of the jobs being cut are production operator positions.
