Bicycling is a popular activity in Bend, but cyclists and drivers are still learning how to share the road.
According to statistics examined by The Bulletin newspaper (http://is.gd/Hvj7PY ), more than 200 crashes between bikes and cars were reported from July 2012 through June 2014. No area of the city was immune to bike-car conflicts, but the collisions occurred most frequently along major thoroughfares and in the city center.
A city transportation engineer and a consultant are trying to identify street designs that could reduce crashes. The city has already started to experiment with a special, more visible area for bicyclists to wait at a red light.
