According to the Oregon Employment Department, there were some 42,900 job vacancies in the state during the summer of 2013. That’s the highest number of job vacancies since the beginning on the great recession in 2009. In July, there were about 157,000 unemployed Oregonians, meaning that there were about four unemployed Oregonians for every vacancy.
80 percent of the vacancies were fulltime jobs and about half of them were described as hard to fill. Several reported needing candidates to have prior experience to be considered for the opening.
