Proposed Jackson County Surcharge Rejected

Jackson County commissioners have dropped the idea of raising money for the jail and libraries by charging households a special fee. The Medford Mail Tribune reports commissioners voted to drop the idea Wednesday after a telephone survey showed voters overwhelmingly say they can't afford the extra $7 a month. Like other counties in Oregon's timber country, Jackson County has been struggling to pay for law enforcement, libraries and other services since federal timber revenues have fallen off due to logging cutbacks to protect fish and wildlife. Voters, for the most part, have refused to make up the difference with higher taxes.
