Two people were arrested for allegedly selling fraudulently selling magazine and book subscriptions. 26-year old Patrick Dow and 27-year old Ashley Chiasson face theft and conspiracy charges. The Jackson County Sheriff's Department received a call Saturday morning that a suspicious woman was selling subscriptions in the 20000 block of Highway 62 in Shady Cove. Witnesses say the woman claimed that proceeds from the subscriptions she was selling would benefit a children's hospital of the customer's choice. Several reportedly bought subscriptions; however, one buy put a stop order on the check when she suspected this was a scam. Saturday afternoon, deputies responded to a call from Wells Fargo inside the Safeway store on Crater Lake Highway. Dow and Chiasson were trying to cash a check that had a stop order on it, prompting the call. Once detained, law enforcement determined Chiasson matched the description of the suspicious woman. Both suspects insisted they were selling the subscriptions legally. Chiasson admitted later that she and Dow were living off the proceeds. At the time of arrested, the two had only $200 left out of $4,687.00 in sales.
