News - Access Food Demand - 5 Dec 12

By admin Wed 5th December News
As Congress and the President work through avoiding the now well-known 'Fiscal Cliff' that has been the topic of so much news, the impact on their decision is expected to be seen at local food banks. Some of the budget cuts being considered could impact the farm bill and subsequently the food stamp program. This might force some people to decide whether to choose between what is called 'Heat Or Eat' choices. It's speculated that 88,000 families could be impacted in Oregon causing them to need additional 'Access' food supplies. Director Jackie Schad says that would have a huge impact on the food they currently provide. 'Access' provides 3,000,000 pounds of food annually in Southern Oregon and Schad says not only does she not know where they would store 12,000,000 lbs of food, but it's hard to believe the community can increase their donations by that much.
