By Jim McCoy Thu 2nd August Newsbiomassforestry

The U.S. Forest Service has made $1.3 million in grants for wood energy projects in the Pacific Northwest. One of their aims is help expand regional economies and create jobs. The grants are part of nearly $4 million in grants distributed nationwide.

The projects will rid the forest of beetle-killed trees and then be taken for processing in bioenergy facilities. Removal of the trees will aid in fire prevention.

One of the six Northwest projects is at Southern Oregon University in the amount of $250,000. The Coquille Economic Development Corporation in North Bend will receive $145,000.
