Fire Season Begins Wednesday

The Oregon Department of Forestry says it will start fire season restrictions Wednesday in Jackson and Josephine counties. That means debris burning will be prohibited, except in burn barrels with permits.

     Southern District spokesman Brian Ballou told the Mail Tribune grass fires have been occurring nearly every day, mostly because of backyard burning.     Rural residents are urged to reduce grass, weeds and brush around structures to decrease the threat of wildfire.

The city of Ashland is also joining in the declaration of fire season. In their community, fireworks are prohibited year round, and now, open debris burning is prohibited. Barbecues and fire rings in Lithia Park may still be used at this time.

The fire danger level will declared "Moderate" or "Blue," and industrial operators will work at IFPL 1.
