Passer-By May Have Saved Man Who Jumped Into Rogue River
A passer-by may have saved the life of a man who jumped off a bridge into the Rogue River yesterday. Bob Smithson was bicycling at 8:10 a.m. near Debs Potts Memorial Bridge in Grants Pass when he saw a man jump. Smithson called 9-1-1 and rescue personnel found 63-year old Jack Powell partially submerged about 600 feet downstream. His injuries were not believed to be life threatening.
A day earlier, Powell was the subject of an attempt-to-locate by police to check on his welfare. They were unable to locate him at the time.
