The Oregon Department of Forestry is reporting eight new fires in southern Oregon after thunderstorms hit the area Monday afternoon. The largest is the Old Blue Mountain Fire, eight miles south of Rogue River, which at last report was at 60 acres. The fire is occurring in what forestry officials say is difficult to reach terrain. More than 1,900 lightning strikes were reported Wednesday in south central Oregon. A fire management partnership for state and federal agencies says firefighters responded to 32 fires in the area. The largest was contained at 2 acres.

Rural/Metro firefighters have been busy today in Josephine County. There are approximately 20 lightning-caused fires since last night; sizes range from one-tenth of an acre to ten acres. As of this morning, no structures were threatened. The Oregon Department of Forestry has committed multiple resources with air tankers and helicopters assisting.
