In a victory for gun rights, the Jackson County Board of Commissioners say they oppose the expansion of background checks for potential owners of firearms. Commissioner Rick Dyer says the board wanted to be proactive should the Oregon legislature move to expand such a background check. It’s a notion that proponents say is needed as a safeguard to guns out of the hands of felons.

Police at Portland International Airport say an Oregon man who was told he couldn't carry a loaded gun through a security checkpoint disregarded the recommendation that he check the pistol through as luggage. They say the man dropped the gun in an airport planter box.
