Case Calls Attention to Oregon Child Labor Laws
Oregon Labor Commissioner Brad Avakian is urging businesses that employ minors to consult his agency (BOLI) first. This comes after Oregon City’s Schultz Manufacturing was fined after a teen was injured using a band saw that he shouldn’t have been operating.
Avakian says the incident was “100 percent avoidable” and Schultz- a manufacturer of motocross parts- was fortunate the young man was not hurt worse. BOLI’s Technical Assistance for Employers Program educates employers the requirements of civil rights and employment laws in Oregon. Use of child labor is specially regulated. Employers are required to get a certificate to employ minors before they hire them.
