Gov. John Kitzhaber has called for expanding gun sale background checks and for new restrictions on carrying guns in elementary and secondary schools as Oregon's Legislature began hearing testimony on gun control bills.
The Senate Judiciary Committee on Friday began hearings on a package of four gun bills. The hearing drew more than 100 speakers.
Gun control advocates had hoped for stronger measures than the ones that have managed to advance in the Legislature, including a ban on military-assault rifles.
But that measure, and a proposed ban on high-capacity ammo magazines, were unable to gain traction amid opposition from gun-rights advocates.
